Why We’re Building a Modular Tool Storage System

Before Crown Forge, I worked as a bridge engineer. I owned an expensive toolbox with tools neatly organised in foam, but whenever I had to take those tools to a job, the system stopped working.

The tools came out of the drawer and went straight into a tool bag.

That meant the storage system worked perfectly in the workshop, but not when the tools actually needed to move.

The problem with fixed tool storage

Foam trays are excellent for keeping tools organised, protected and easy to account for.

Every tool has a defined place, so it is obvious what is there and what is missing. If something has not been returned after a job, you can see it immediately.

The problem is that most foam storage is designed around a fixed toolbox drawer.

Once you need to take a selection of tools somewhere else, you either carry the entire drawer system or remove the tools from the foam and lose the organisation you paid for in the first place.

Foam storage has been done well for years. What has not been solved well is what happens the moment those tools need to leave the workshop.

One tray, two jobs

The Crown Forge system uses modular foam trays that work both in the toolbox and inside dedicated carry cases.

The same tray can sit in a drawer during normal use, then be lifted out and placed directly into a case when the tools need to travel.

There is no need to unpack the tools, reorganise them or create a second storage system.

Take the tray out. Put it in the case. Take it with you.

When the job is finished, the same tray goes straight back into the toolbox.

Why modular?

The system uses standard 60, 120, 180 and 240 mm module widths.

That means different tool sets can share the same format and be combined depending on the job.

Not every job needs every tool, so instead of carrying an entire toolbox worth of equipment, you can take the individual modules you actually need.

The trays also feature magnetic bases, keeping them secure in steel toolboxes, drawers and trolleys during normal use.

The cases stack securely on top of one another, allowing multiple modules to travel together as one organised system rather than a collection of loose boxes.

Each tray still keeps every tool in its place, so you can quickly check what you have before leaving and what has come back afterwards.
