Why We Chose a 72-Tooth Ratchet
More teeth doesn't automatically mean a better ratchet.
Modern ratchets are available with increasingly fine mechanisms, including 72, 90, 100 teeth and beyond. When developing our ratchets, we weren't interested in chasing the largest number we could print on the packaging.
We were interested in finding the mechanism we were most confident putting the Crown Forge name on.
What tooth count actually means
The tooth count determines the theoretical swing arc, which is the minimum movement required for the ratchet to engage the next tooth.
The calculation is straightforward: 360° divided by the number of teeth.

24 teeth: 15°

36 teeth: 10°

72 teeth: 5°

90 teeth: 4°
In practice, a smaller swing arc gives you more room to work in confined spaces.
Around engines, suspension components, chassis work and tightly packaged assemblies, that matters. A 5° swing gives considerably more flexibility than older coarse-tooth mechanisms.
But tooth count alone doesn't tell you whether a ratchet is actually good.
Why we chose 72 teeth
We looked at a range of different mechanisms, including higher tooth-count options.
The deciding factor wasn't simply the number of teeth. It was the overall quality of the mechanism we could achieve.
We wanted positive engagement, low backlash, smooth operation, consistent manufacturing and enough confidence in the mechanism to stand behind it long term.
The 72-tooth mechanism gave us the strongest overall combination of those characteristics from the options available to us.
Could we have chosen a higher tooth count?
Yes.
But adding another number to the specification sheet wasn't worth accepting a mechanism we were less confident in.
That wasn't a compromise we were prepared to make.
Higher tooth counts aren't automatically better
As tooth counts increase, the teeth become finer and the mechanism generally becomes more dependent on accurate tooth geometry, pawl engagement and tight manufacturing tolerances.
That doesn't mean a 90-tooth or 120-tooth ratchet is inherently weaker. A well-designed and well-manufactured high-tooth-count ratchet can be excellent.
But equally, a high number printed on the packaging doesn't guarantee a better tool.
For us, the question was simple:
Which mechanism performs well enough, consistently enough, for us to put our lifetime warranty behind it?
For the ratchets we selected, the answer was 72 teeth.
What we cared about instead
Tooth count was only one part of the evaluation.
We were more interested in how positively the mechanism engaged, how much movement existed before engagement, how smoothly it operated and how confidently the pawl engaged with the gear.
We also wanted the mechanism to remain serviceable.
Rather than treating the ratchet head as a sealed unit, the internal mechanism can be accessed by removing the retaining circlip.
That means the head can be inspected, cleaned and lubricated rather than automatically becoming disposable if contamination or wear develops over time.
It's a relatively small detail, but it reflects a wider principle behind Crown Forge:
A professional tool should be designed to stay in service.
Why 72 teeth isn't the selling point
There are plenty of 72-tooth ratchets on the market.
We're not pretending the tooth count itself is unusual.
What matters is the mechanism behind that number, how it's made, how consistently it engages, how it behaves under load and whether we are confident enough in it to support it for the life of the tool.
That's the standard we're interested in.
The number on the box comes second.
